Mark Readings visits 6 Green

Year 6 Green were today visited by old boy and current Channel 7 sports reporter Mark Readings. Harry Smith has been researching TV presenting and talk shows as part of his Genius Projects which the class has been involved with. Harry invited Mark in to interview him about his career.

Mark shared many interesting anecdotes about his life including his time at Trinity and detailed his career to date, including his award winning reporting of The Bali Bombings which won him a Logie, which his also brought in to show.

It was a great pleasure to have Mark as a guest in the class and many thanks to Dion, Harry's Dad for organising this.

Genius Projects!

In 6 Green we have been exploring topics that we are passionate about. The class have all chosen a topic or subject area they are very interested in and are creating a project based on their topic. This has been a great opportunity for the class to take charge of their learning, be really creative, and learn new things about a topic they love.

Its up to the boys what they end up creating they just need to display their new learning on their topic, Final assessment will be through a rubric the class will devise together.

The Genius Project concept was initiated by Google who allow their staff to devote 20 percent of their working week on exploring topics they are interested in.

Remembrance Day

Yesterday Remembrance Day was observed by the class. We stood and reflected for the minute's silence. We then as a class explained the meaning and history of the day.

The class then engaged with some writing tasks. I was very impressed with some of the heartfelt pieces that were created. Here are a couple of excerpts for you to read.

My name is Thomas Woodacre, I am an Australian soldier who fought in World War 2 (sigh) I remember it as if it was yesterday let me tell all about the war that changed the earth forever.

It was on one fateful day…September 1 1939 I was on my way to Germany to fight against a very bad man called Hitler whom wanted to take over the earth. Sailing on a boat, my heart beating like a fire gone wild… full of fear I fret that I won’t come back to my family.

Remembrance Day, a day to remember,
Always held on the eleventh of November.
Where poppies grow,
Where spirits blow,
And bodies lay on embers.
A rifle here, a soldier there.
Blood is flowing everywhere.
They heard screaming, they heard pain.
Then they heard it all again.
So now we stand,
Hand in hand.

There still is nothing left to gain.
